  1. WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN? - A dental crown is used to restore a damaged tooth. It is a cap that surrounds the tooth. Crowns can be made of all-metal, ceramic-on-metal, or all-ceramic materials. Based on what teeth will be affected by the crown, determines the best material to use.
  2. MATERIALS THAT CAN BE USED FOR A CROWN - If you are in need of a crown on your front teeth, then an all-ceramic crown will be used because the coloring appears the most natural for your smile. Some patients choose to use the ceramic-on-metal crowns for the front teeth because the metal provides underneath the ceramic provides more durability than just all ceramic.
  3. PREPARING FOR A CROWN - Preparing your teeth for a crown involves removing a portion of the enamel so that there will be room for the new crown to be placed over the tooth, and it will not affect the placement of the surrounding teeth.
  4. THE CROWN PROCEDURE - Once this process is complete, the tooth is cleaned and a temporary crown is put in place using removable glue. A temporary crown is put in place while patients wait for their permanent one to be custom-made in the lab.
  5. AFTER THE PERMANENT CROWN IS IN PLACE - While waiting to receive a permanent crown, patients must be careful to watch what they eat and how they brush their teeth because the temporary crown is designed to come off. Once the permanent crown is in place, the patient must still be careful of what they eat and how they brush, but they can resume normal activities as usual with their fully restored tooth.
